A coalition of national associations and federal agencies building a common agenda for cultural tourism. Representing a broad spectrum of arts, humanities, tourism and heritage organizations, as well as federal agencies, the partners' purpose is to advance the role of culture and heritage in national, state and local travel and tourism policies and practices.

CIVIC TOURISM CONFERENCE

Set for October 2008

The 2008 Civic Tourism conference will be held October 15-18, 2008, in the Blackstone Valley of Rhode Island. The meeting will feature speakers who practice responsible, place-based tourism.

The conference sponsor is the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council’s Sustainable Tourism Planning and Development Laboratory. The conference theme is “Civic Tourism II: Defining and Animating Place.”

2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations®

Each year since 2000, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has selected 12 vacation destinations across the United States that offer an authentic visitor experience by combining dynamic downtowns, cultural diversity, attractive architecture, cultural landscapes and a strong commitment to historic preservation and revitalization.

The 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations are:

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Fort Davis, Texas
Red Wing, Minnesota
Friday Harbor, Washington

Aiken, South Carolina

Columbus, Mississippi

Each destination is hosting a local event for their community officials, National Trust for Historic Preservation representatives and the media. These events are today, later this month, or in March. The destinations are producing road and street signage, websites, newsletters, tour guides and logo ware to promote the designation. Proclamations for the designation have been issued by mayors, governors and a few Congressional offices.
